"What I remember the best about Gary is his laugh. He could, and often did, laugh like a delighted child who just had a magician at a party pull a coin from behind his ear. What I also remember is that when he looked sad, he didn’t look so much sad as he did disappointed, as if he’d been betrayed of a promise that had been made to him and it would never be OK again. Gary was very elegant on stage. He was a very elegant dancer. His long arms were just so articulate. It was as if he was speaking with his movement. I also remember that Gary was very often late for things: late for rehearsals, late for appointments, but somehow you could never stay angry with him for very long, which was a good thing. I shared a flat with Gary and one thing I remember about Gary at that time is that he was really a terrible cook, so I ended up making dinner most of the time. He was willing to learn and he did learn so by the time we were about to move out of the apartment that we shared, he was actually not a bad cook. I laughed a lot with Gary."
