Biography

Luiza Braz Batista was born in 1989 in Vitória, Brazil, and begins her dance career with Companhia de Dança Primeiro Ato in Belo Horizonte. In 2009, she graduates with a Master's degree in Dance from the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen and becomes a member of the Folkwang Dance Studio (FTS), where she remains active until 2015.

Since 2008, Luiza has been a guest artist with Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. Under the artistic direction of Pina Bausch herself, she performs in The Rite of Spring, touring the work extensively through international guest performances. This is followed by Iphigenie auf Tauris, Wind from West, The Second Spring, and Orpheus und Eurydike in which she embodies the role of Eurydice.

From 2015 to 2018, Luiza is a soloist with Susanne Linke's dance company at Theater Trier. From 2018 to 2022, she works as an actress, choreographer, and director within the theatre’s drama ensemble. Throughout her career, she collaborates with renowned choreographers and directors including Suely Machado, David Hernandez, Moya Michael, Emanuel Gat, Hannes Langolf, Mark Sieczkarek, Maura Morales, and Julio Cesar Iglesias Ungo. As a guest teacher and workshop leader, she is invited to international institutions, including the dance company of Theater Regensburg, Companhia de Dança do Palácio das Artes in Belo Horizonte, and Grupo de Dança Primeiro Ato.

Alongside her artistic work, Luiza has worked as a rehearsal director for the Pina Bausch Foundation since 2024.
In her own artistic practice as a choreographer and director, Luiza focuses on themes of identity, memory, and belonging. In addition to her work as a performer, choreographer, and director, she is also active as a producer and curator, advocating for the visibility of marginalized perspectives in the performing arts. In 2024, she curates the first edition of the ReConexão Africanidades Festival in Congonhas, Brazil, and is responsible for the concept and production of the InCorPorAr Dance Film Festival in Belo Horizonte. Since 2026, she has been the Head of Production and Festival Coordinator of the Movement Art International Dance Festival in Luxembourg/Trier.
